Debate Matters

Read and respond to the seven sections found in the linked AP article, Debate Impressions.

Your responses should be on loose-leaf paper and be at least 3-5 sentences in length per section.

All students should complete the assignment regardless of wether or not they saw the debate. They are reading and responding to the material in the article attached.

If necessary, students can watch debate clips here:

(Clips are on the left side of the webpage.)

David McCullough, Jr. HS Commencement Speech

GET BUSY!

In a pivotal moment from Stephen King's novella, "Rita Hayworth and the Shawshank Redemption" Andy counters Red's notion of hope (being a dangerous thing) with his own unique perspective, saying: "I guess it comes down to a simple choice: Get busy living, or get busy dying."

In the beginning of the year you wrote a letter to yourself, detailing the hopes and expectations you held for the months that would follow. Now, as you find yourself in the fourth and final quarter of your senior year, I'm asking you to write one more letter to yourself.... one that details all the ways you hope to "get busy living" when you leave these classrooms behind in just a few weeks. (NOTE: Even if you haven't committed to any solid plans yet, you can still write to the notion of hope!!!) What are your hopes for post-graduation? What changes are you thinking of making? What challenges must you overcome? What accomplishments can you be proud of? Who are the people who have helped you along the way? What part(s) of your current routine (other than our class and my outstanding wit) will you miss, and why? What is your "ultimate" dream, and how can you attain it? How does it differ (if at all) from the "practical" dream you hold on to?

Somehow, all of this reminds me of the Langston Hughes poem, Dreams in which he writes:
Hold fast to dreams
For if dreams die
Life is a broken-winged bird
That cannot fly.
Hold fast to dreams
For when dreams go
Life is a barren field
Frozen with snow.

ASSIGNMENT: How will you "hold fast to dreams" and how are you planning to "get busy living?" Write a FINAL letter to your high school self-- take this SERIOUSLY-- and I'll give you an envelope when I collect it tomorrow. I will NOT read the actual content of you letter, but I will glance at it for all of 2 SECONDS to see that it meets the required length and isn't written in Mandarin or Hieroglyphics!!!

IMPORTANT UPDATE!

Sooooo, I've been totally sidelined with various infirmities over the past 2 weeks, BUT, I'm slowly getting back into the swing of things and want to update everyone on class expectations and deadlines.
We originally had a deadline of Friday April 20th for your final 10 project pieces. Since I've been out though, I thought I'd extend that to Monday and offer a "split" of sorts.
New deadlines are as follows:

5 NEW pieces completed and handed in by Monday, April 23, 2012 (That should bring your total to 25.)

5 NEW pieces completed and handed in by Friday, April 27, 2012 (That should bring your total to 30!)

Email me at my GMAIL account if you need to know what pieces I have in my possession.

**BONUS POINTS FOR ANYONE WHO HANDS IN ALL TEN BY MONDAY for a final TOTAL of THIRTY FINISHED PIECES!**

Don't worry too much about the Prologue and Table of Contents at this point. Concentrate on the 30 pieces-- and be sure you complete the required *** prompts. Some of the pieces I've already graded are WAY TOO SHORT, so be sure to revise any pieces that you feel will drag your final average down.

Trayvon Martin

There is still SO much to be said and told surrounding this case, but the NY Times has some interesting links on their Education blog. As always, you should question and search for a variety of sources-- especially when dealing with "hot-button" issues.

Email me your thoughts on the subject by FRIDAY.
Thanks!

"That which we imagine and that which we create..."

You guys are probably WAY too young to know this guy from his show, "Reading Rainbow," but he's pretty awesome. And this speech is too...

Research Paper Reminder!

REMINDER: Your final draft is due on Monday, February 13, 2012!

You are REQUIRED to email/share with me a copy as well as hand in a hard-copy at the start of class on Monday. You must also hand in your research folder complete with any source materials and previously-graded research work (ie, pre-thesis, thesis worksheet, outline, 1st draft...)

REMEMBER: late papers and un-emailed papers will result in a DRASTIC reduction of your grade, as well as the possibility of a SECOND research project being assigned! (For real...)

DON'T FORGET TO PROOFREAD YOUR WORK!!!
Here's a SAMPLE checklist to help you perform a final check of your paper:

Best of luck! Although, if you've been doing everything in keeping with our timeline, you won't need luck!!!

If you have trouble with the formatting in Google Docs, just do your best with it and then copy and paste your work into a Word doc once you get to school tomorrow-- before any classes start, of course!!

CONGRATS ON GETTING THIS FAR!!!

The Joy of Books

During my high school years, and even right up through graduate school, I always seem to have found a way to work in a bookshop or English department. There's just something nice about being surrounded by books.

It's a little like this...

RESEARCH PAPER INFO

Believe it or not, it's time to start actual construction of your research paper!

These are the steps we have already taken in the process:
• Identify topic
• Get familiar with researching techniques—don’t know where to start? See the librarian!
• Spend some time in the library searching for sources.
• Know the documentation style you need to use (MLA) and find out how to use it.
• Narrow topic while researching. Is there enough research on topic? If not, make the necessary changes.

And THIS is what we are about to complete in the next month and a half:
• Write thesis statement and supporting points.
• Continue researching. Create notecards to keep track of sources and important points/ideas. Match the supporting points of your thesis statement with the research that ties to it.
• Create a working outline that shows main ideas and major and minor details. This will help you organize your paper when you are writing it later!
• Finish research by filling in gaps
• Does your thesis need to be revised or refined? Do it!
• Write rough draft, using outline.
• Develop a Works Cited sheet.
• Hand in a rough draft!
• Re-write paper, based on teacher and peer edit comments
• Write final draft and proofread!

• Turn paper in on time! "On time" means at the start of the period. Your rough draft and your final draft should be emailed as a formatted Word document. All work must be in Times New Roman, 12-point font, with double spacing and a header on each page. Your header should be your last name and the page number. (Ie: Keenan 4 as the header on the fourth page...)

If you are absent, it will be considered late. Each late day results in a loss of one full letter grade!

We'll go over things more in depth as the week goes on.

OUR DUE DATES:
· Thesis Statement due Friday January 13th
· Outline due Tuesday January 17th
· First draft due Friday January 27th (This happens to be the end of 2nd quarter!)
· FINAL DUE DATE: Monday, February 13th

Downton Abbey!

The most FABULOUS British television period drama, Downton Abbey, is coming back to PBS tomorrow night! The first season introduces viewers to the inner workings of a fictional estate, Downton Abbey, during the 1900s. It follows the lives of an aristocratic family and their servants. I know. You probably think that sounds REALLY boring, BUT it's actually REALLY interesting.

The second season returns Sunday at 9pm on PBS (for me, that's channel 13).
CHECK IT OUT!
