Last Minute Tips for Senior Memoirs!

I hope everyone has a safe and fun-filled Memorial Day Weekend. If you're smart you'll work on your memoirs at some point! Once again, the final product is due by the bell at the start of your class period on Monday, June 2nd.
NO LATE WORK WILL BE ACCEPTED.
You have been given at least 2 quarters to complete this project and should hand it in on Friday, 5/30 if you think you might miss the Monday deadline. 10 extra points will be given to memoirs that are handed in on Friday!

I have gone over the following things in class and expect that everyone is aware of, and follows through on these issues.

  • All work is to placed in a hard-cover binder, no larger than 1-inch in size.
  • Writing pieces should be placed in top-loading, clear plastic sheet protectors.
  • The cover of your memoir should include your title, your name, English 12, Period #, Ms. Keenan and any visuals you decide to include.
  • The first page inside the memoir should be a Title Page which simply includes the title and author of the work. Ex: "My Title" By Ms. Keenan (Include a visual if you wish.) Remember to properly capitalize your title.
  • The Table of Contents is the next page. Spell it correctly and capitalize it correctly! Center the label Table of Contents at the top of the page and then list the pieces included in your memoir. Start with Prologue (not numbered), and then proceed to list work in numerical order ACCORDING to OUR class packet and according to the pieces you chose to complete. Example:
                               Table of Contents
Prologue
1. What's in a Name?
2. Personal Alphabet
3. Likes/Dislikes List
6. Time Capsule

  • The prologue is next. This is your introduction and should be at least 3 paragraphs in length. The last paragraph should explain the relevance of your title. This should be written from a first person point of view.
  • Pages should not be numbered and do not need headings other than the number of the piece and the title. Ex: 18. Synectics
  • Titles must be written exactly as you find them in the class packet. If you decide to add a subtitle, it should be in italics and appear next to (with a colon) or below the packet title (no colon).
    • Example:
    • 2. Personal Alphabet: The ABCs of Me
  • Remember that a paragraph is 5-8 sentences. Unless a piece specifies a short paragraph (3-5 sentences), most pieces need to be at least 3-5 paragraphs in length.
  • FOLLOW the DIRECTIONS for each piece! If your drafts have checks or check minuses on them it means you either haven't written enough, have errors in format, grammar, spelling, punctuation, etc, and/or haven't met the requirements of the piece.
  • Don't forget to complete the REQUIRED (***) pieces.
  • We went over #18 in class. Do NOT include the question; restate the question as a comparison in about 2 sentences.
    • Example: 1. A pen is wiser than a pencil because a pen doesn't need an eraser. A pen is confident in the marks it makes, unlike a pencil which uses its eraser as a security blanket.
    • Example: 7. Mathematics is more like a promise than science because mathematics follows strict rules. Science is ever-changing and often unpredictable.
  • #35. Where I'm From should be a poem, but a prose piece is okay as long as it uses similar literary devices to those found in the original poem. Look at the examples from the link I put on this website. Model your response after your findings.
  • #40. The Door needs to be longer for MANY of you. The directions ask for at least 2 paragraphs for EACH sentence!
  • #41 Advice to the Young is NOT a list! Write out your advice. Your list might be good, but write it out as a prose piece!
  • #44 Valuable Lessons needs to be ranked and explained. See directions for specifics.
  • #46 Dear Blank, Please Blank needs to have a closing in the form of Sincerely, From, or Love,.
  • Free Choice Assignments should be titled as follows:
                        60.    Free Choice Assignment #1:  "Your Title Here"
  • The Epilogue is the last piece in your writing portfolio. It needs to be written in the 3rd-person point of view and give at least 5-10 "shout-outs" to the work within your memoir.

BRIT LIT: SENIOR MEMORY BOOK UPDATE!

We're in the final stretch here, folks!!!!!
The next TEN typed memory book drafts are due by Wednesday, May 14th.

Extra points awarded to those who hand in copies on Monday, May 12th, or Tuesday, May 13th. All remaining pieces (minimum of 5 more) MUST BE HANDED IN NO LATER THAN FRIDAY, MAY 16, 2014.

Failure to hand in work at that point will result in an INCOMPLETE for the course, as it is a major project requirement that you were assigned MONTHS AGO.

I will go over the requirements for the Prologue, Epilogue, Title Page, etc. in class next week.

The FINAL, fully-jazzed, proofread, edited, and completed memory books are due in a binder by Monday, June 2, 2014.
