Nurse describes Ebola quarantine ordeal: 'I was in shock. Now I'm angry'

ARTICLE 2: from The Huffington Post
Grieving Mother Faces 36 Months In Jail For Jaywalking After Son Is Killed By Hit-And-Run Driver

  1. Article 2: Nelson was not shown the slightest bit of empathy while in court. She faced a jury unfamiliar with the circumstances of her daily life which led to the loss of her son. Because of this she was over charged and faced more of a sentence than the intoxicated man behind the vehicle which took her son's life. If Jerry Guy (who has a history of hit-and-runs)was prohibited from being on the road until his 'problem' was taken care of, it might have prevented this tragedy from occurring. One could argue that the fault of incident lies upon Jerry Guy only, but that would be incorrect. I cross the street almost everyday with my little brothers in hand while always keeping in mind the importance of my grip. I realize that she had groceries and three children with her, but no matter what, as a guardian of these children, she is responsible for their lives and safety.

  2. Article 2: After reading this article I really do believe that Nelson really was an irresponsible parent taking all her kids to stand in the middle of a divider to wait for on coming traffic; Doing that by yourself isn't even safe.. It is truly unfortunate that her child died in the hit and run, I could only imagine how bad she feels witnessing the death of her child..... But I don't find it necessary to punish someone with jail time when they lost their child, like that's not punishment enough. She did act irresponsible but I guess the law has no room for sympathy.

Article 1: The government hasn't really done their job when it comes to the Ebola outbreak, but when they actually do their job they basically hold someone against their will even after they tested negative for Ebola twice. The doctor in the article had to be quarantined for 21 days after she was deemed negative for Ebola. Now she is protesting saying it isn't right for the government to do that and she is absolutely right about that.

  3. I feel that the guy jerry, who HIT and KILLED the little boy while driving DRUNK should've gotten a longer sentence, or maybe even life in jail. He broke multiple laws and did man slaughter. I cant even imagine how the jury came up with the decision to put the mother of the deceased boy in jail for 3 YEARS. she didn't necessarily do anything wrong. She was holding her kids hand, he was just mistaken and followed everyone into the street. She shouldn't be given that huge consequence along with the grievance of her son. The jury and whoever else is affiliated with this case should rethink their decision, that is so cruel

  4. Article 1: Even when there is a chance that a virus will be exposed to the public, this doesn’t mean the government should be able to take away one’s rights. Kaci Hickox, an epidemiologist, was placed under mandatory quarantine in New Jersey because she was treating Ebola patients in Sierra Leone. Even though she has tested negative twice for Ebola and shows no symptoms, she is to be quarantined for twenty-one days at the University Hospital in Newark, New Jersey. When Governor Andrew Cuomo announced changes to the state’s mandatory quarantine policy for health workers who have returned from an Ebola zone, allowed Hickox to spend her quarantine in her own home and not in a tent outside the hospital. However any form of confinement is still just an inhumane prison for those who have tested negative for the virus. While it is the governments job to protect the people, they must protect the people’s rights first.

Article 2: Although what happened with Raquel Nelson’s son is tragic, what made matters worse is what Nelson had to go through afterwards. While I do agree with what Micaela says that Nelson is a part of the blame for what happened and is responsible for the lives and safety of her children, I do not believe that Nelson received a fair trial. Raquel Nelson, a black woman who relies on public transportation, had to face an all-white jury, and of those who convicted Nelson did not raise their hands when asked if they relied on public transportation. Nelson was given a jury who could not visualize what happened in Nelson’s shoes. If she had been given a jury where even half could understand her situation, then maybe they would have been able to come to a lighter decision for her. She shouldn't have to face more jail time then the man who actually hit and ran from the scene where her son died.

  5. Article 1: I feel like in this article from my point of view the hospital treated her bad. The fact that they didn't let her shower or even have a tv is crazy. They didn't even let her talk to her own lawyer that made me think they didn't want her to do anything to take action against them. No wonder the women's mad she gave up almost a month of her life just to stare at walls. She wasn't even sick though. A lot of people probably think oh it's 21 days that's nothing it's for the good and well being of others. Ok that's fine but she tested negative twice what more do u want. I get bored at home in like 3hrs I wouldn't be able to do what she did for 21 days. She's brave for caring for the Ebola patients. I applaud her for that.

Article 2: this article is about a mother who missed the bus and decided to take a short cut and jaywalk with her kids. First of all the man who hit the young boy her son. He was drunk and drugged up and it wasn't his first hit and run. To me just knowing that it's all his fault he's the one that deserves to be locked up. I would of never thought it would of been her. It's hard for a young women with kids. It's not her fault and I feel like she didn't get a fair trial either. She shouldn't have to pay for that she already lost a child isn't that enough.

  6. Article 1:I personally feel like it was the right thing for Kaci Hickox to be placed under mandatory quarantine because there was still a possibility that the virus could just have been dormant. Governor Christie did not do anything wrong by putting her under mandatory quarantine because if she did have the virus and spread it to others, he would have to be one of the people that all the blame falls upon. So he definitely did do the right thing. Maybe the only thing that should have changed was the treatment. They could have treated her much better than they did while helping her to understand that even though she looks to be Ebola free, there is still a chance that she may have the virus and that they are just trying to be precautious.

  7. Article:1 I think that it is ridiculous to allow politicians, people who are not even doctors, and probably don't even know how Ebola works, to decide if mandatory quarantine is necessary. If she has not shown any symptoms now she does not have it, and all this is accomplishing is taking away her rights and making the people who decided this look bad.
Articles:2 First thing wrong with this case is that it is blaming the victim and she was not judged by a jury of her peers. Okay so maybe its not safe to jaywalk across a busy street, but when the cross walk is so far away people will say screw it and jaywalk, I know because I've done it before and see people do it all the time. the driver was also under the influence and blind in on eye, impaired at the time the child would probably still be alive.

  8. Article 1: Ebola is a big disease that started in African then slowly come to the United States. Many people like traveling around but they don’t realize they are being diseases back. This poor lady named Kaci Hickox, come back from African. She was helping out there to stop diseases. When she come back she went to containment so she took be tested for Ebola. The first time she tested negative but she wasn’t able to leave the containment. Then she was tested the second tome and she was negative again. They did so many test for no reason. I don’t believe this is right of she was tested twice and ot come out negative then why keep she there. No reason to keep her there.

Article 2: In my opinion, I don’t think it’s right that Nelson got convicted for something that everybody does if the government doesn’t want people to jwalk then they shouldn’t have a side walk so far away from the bus stop. Her kid die I think that’s the worst punishment that could happen to her. She even saw her kid die in front of her. Why is Guy even driving still he is blind in one eye, and also got in trouble for hit and runs before. The government is taking it out on her when the person who killed the kid should take all the blame.

  9. Article 1: While I fully understand (to the best of my abilities...) the threat ebola poses, panicking will not help solve the problem. While yes people returning from an area with a deadly disease should be quarantined, it is not smart to place people who have tested negative (TWICE no less.) may only be a waste of time and resources. Mandatory and indiscriminate quarantines may have been necessary in the 1800's, but now that we have the technology to detect the presence of a virus in someone's system before they fall ill we should use it and save the hospital beds and medical attention for the people who actually have it.
Article 2: Before I get into the legalities and ethics of this tragic accident and the strange sentences that followed there is one important point threat needs to be addressed. Not how the drunk driver charged with previous hit and runs, not that Nelson should not have crossed that section of the street to begin with, but why a crosswalk was not nearby the bus stop. I am sure this is not the only bus stop in the country that is across from apartments or a major store without an immediate crosswalk, but why do these situations even exist? Imagine you got home from work late and the nearest crosswalk from your bus stop was a half a mile down the road, but your house was right across the street. You are tired and have to get up early again tomorrow or just have to go to the restroom what would you do? Most people will take the shortcut and jaywalk even across a busy street if it means getting somewhere quicker. Maybe there is more than the way our legal system works that needs to be questioned, when it appears that this section of the city was not made with humans in mind.

  10. I agree with the nurse that keeping her under quarintine for 21 days is unfair especially when she tested negative. In some cases this is a good idea just in case the symptoms come later in the week. - Chelsea blanc

Article 2: First of all this article is ridiculous! I mean how crazy is this, she just lost a child and now might have to serve 39 months in jail. The hit and run driver Jerry Guy only served six months out of the 5 year term , that isn't justice served at all. The Supreme Court System is supposed to help serve justice to those that have done wrong to others in society; justice hasn'tbeen served in this case. Jaywalking is a crime, but however this woman should be given some slack because she witnessed her son's murder and not only had to relive the nightmare at Guys' trial. I understand that laws that we have our important and are there for a reason but some laws should be taken a little lightly.

  12. Article 1:This nurse was in quarantine and felt like she was trapped because she had no other contact with the outside world but through her phone. I feel that people who come from africa to america should automatically be quarantined. why should we take the chance of spreading it because someone feels it is unneccessary?
Article 2: This mother was just trying to take her kids home and she had to cross a major street it was unfair for them to give her charges based on circumstances they didnt understand. It goes back to the story The Pedestrian, cities are built around cars and not people.

  13. Article 1: Honestly, I believed the nurse that was quarantined has every right to be upset and violated due to what happened to her. The government is truly lacking when it comes to the subject of Ebola, and to find out that a women who tested negative for Ebola was quarantined was extremely outrageous! Instead of focusing on people who is NEGATIVE for Ebola, why not close up the boarders for a bit to solve this issue, after all isn't it the governments job to protect us?
Article 2: How in the world can Nelson possibly be facing jail time when her son was hit by a drunk driver? Yes, she may have be jaywalking but so were others, but are they getting arrested too? i think NOT. Also how in the world can a man who was drinking and driving while taking painkillers go free? Honestly something is wrong with this society if this is called "justice".

  14. Article 1: I don't believe this nurse should be held in a quarantine. That's in a way dehumanization. Plenty of people have been in contact with others who contracted the virus but they're not quarantined. They're only tested; yes, this nurse was physically there in West Africa but she was in contact with people who had it just like others who came in contact with peole who were here who had it. This is unfair to the nurse and a complete example of dehumanization.

Article 2: I do not believe that this woman should be charged with anything. Yes it's illegal to jaywalk, but how often do people honestly get charged for it? I don't believe walking in a cross walk could be safer considering it was the reckless act of the driver. Regardless if you're in a crosswalk or not, a reckless driver will be a reckless driver.

  15. Article2 // Honestly its sad how now in days people have the guts to hurt or harm anyone and don't bother to tell the truth. Its sad how its mostly teenagers and babies that are the one who have to suffer with the consequences. Nelson didn't expect nothing was going to happen but this is why people should be careful because now in days people don't realize what they are doing and could probably careless.

Article 1 // Knowing there's a virus going around the world isn't a good. Knowing it can harm my self within weeks days or even months can be type scary. I think its not her fault. Things happen but un expecting. Its sad how she would help others but you just don't know what 's going to happen at every minute.

  16. Article 1: For a politician who is not a doctor to say that someone is "obviously ill" but never even met or seen that person is ridiculous. Shes been tested twice and shows no symptoms so she knew what she was doing while taking care of the patients. she wore the protective gear like she was supposed to and followed the procedures so she wouldnt catch it. To quarantined based under the observation of politicians is wrong.
Article 2: Nelson did put her kids in danger by crossing the street where they werent supposed to but for the mom to be convicted with a sentence longer then the driver is not fair. If Jerry Guy had never drank or took painkillers or had even gotten in the car the boy would still be here. it was the driver who basically did the crime even though they were in the wrong spot; they had to cross the street either way.

  17. Article 1: In my opinion I dont think that it's right that Kaci Hickox is quarantined for 21 days at University Hospital in Newark. Kaci Hickox says tha she has has tested negative twice for Ebola and does not have symptoms. I understand that the government wants to stop Ebola from spreading, but why quarantine a female that is not diagnosed. If the government wants to stop ebola from spreading then they should close down the airports, so that diseases from other countries wont enter into the United States.

  18. Article 1: I don't believe that the nurse should be quarantined if she was tested negative for Ebola. This lady has been quarantined for the longest when there are other people who could be carrying the disease who isn't contained. They tested this nurse so many times for no reason. I don't believe the government is treating this disease right. It is fair to the nurse who risked her life to try to help these people with the disease in Africa and have to come back to America and be in lock down because people are afraid of catching it. yes, it is scary but if she was tested negative to the disease she should be out quarantine. If the government is so afraid of America catching the disease maybe he should close the borders for a while until everything is figured out, as Lillian said.

Article 2: Yes, it is illegal for the mother to have been jaywalking with her son and risking their lives, but it wasn't right to give the mother who just lost her son a longer sentence than the driver. This driver was drinking and driving, if he wasn't doing that maybe he would've saw the mother and her son. Many people jaywalk and get away with it, this mother was only trying to get her and her son home and unfortunately she lost her son, they were at a place at the wrong time. Who's to say even if they crossed the street legally something could have happened because the driver was drinking and also on pain killers. This wasn't fair to the mother, what kind of justice is that ?

  19. Article 1: The politicians are right and wrong in a way. The politicians are just trying to keep Ebola from spreading in the U.S. by the only way they know how. In times of war people loose some of their rights of liberty. Well isn't the U.S. technically at war with Ebola. Therefore if anyone is associated with Ebola in anyway they should be quarantined. If there is a situation like the nurse where she showed no symptom and tested negative twice, then you should only be held for 1-2 weeks. There's no such thing as being over prepared.

Article 2: What happened to Raquel Nelson is preposterous. I know everyone in that jury, even the judge j walked at least once in their life. Nelson was given an unfair trial all around. From the race of the jury to if any of them ever used public transportation before. I get that the jury might be trying to make an example of nelson so other people don't j walk, but the jail time was just wrong plain wrong. How does a drunk driver do a hit and run and kill someone get less jail time? That was the biggest mistake of this case.

  20. Article 1- I don't understand what the reason behind quarantining Hickox if she tested negative twice. What is the point of the test if they're still going to hold her in quarantine for 21 days. I feel she has every right in the world to be upset at Christie's comment. How can he say someone is obviously ill on national tv when he doesn't even know whats going on. I just think they went about this whole situation wrong and it shouldn't been handled in a much more professional way.
Article 2: Honestly i feel if this was a white woman with white kids they would even think to prosecute her for "jaywalking". This is absolutely ridiculous. What kind of people would send a mother mourning over her sons death to jail for jaywalking. People have no sympathy

Article 1: I think its good that there quartine just in case , Ebola is a serious disease that is deadly and we wouldnt want it to spread into a state and become a worldy disease.

  22. honestly knowing that's there is a virus going around that can kill people is kinda scary. I would be a little precautious of the virus. she tested negative for the virus twice so there was no need to quarantine her like thst. she felt that her rights was violated she should feel that way. the kept her quarantined and she didn't even have the virus. if they wanna stop ebola they should have people that come from Africa automatically checked for the virus

  23. Article 1: if tested negative why should it be fair to be held in quarantine for a long period time ? she was being held as a prisoner for 21 days for something she doesn’t even have. maybe she was isolated so that people wouldn’t be scared so that the situation wouldn’t draw as much attention. With the negative results her rights were still violated so i understand why she’s so upset about the situation but then again she has to think about how the public would react to a women that might have been infected with this deadly disease. Maybe it was for the better maybe it wasn’t.
Article 2: Yes , what the mother did was illegal and wrong but i think that the Georgia Solicitor General's office should have gave her a fair consequence instead of giving her more time then the man that killed her son. I think that they over exaggerated what Nelson did and forgot about the fact that a man was drunk driving and killed her child. she was in the wrong for jay walking but he was in the wrong as well. There was other people there with Nelson how come they didn't get prosecuted for jay walking as well ? I think they are more worried about what the public will think and what would be the out come of the decisions they make more then worried about what is right and wrong .
